BEGOTTENE. Elias Merhige, 19903/5
It’s only 78 minutes long and I had to watch it in three sittings, which I suppose says something about how uncompelling and tone-deaf its rhythm is. The way the sequences linger is boring and desensitizing, or maybe it’s actually voyeuristic and brilliant, contributing to the sense that this is actual found footage of some buried evil. I don’t know. I’m not sure how I feel about this one, but if religion were a person, this would be one of its primordial nightmares.
